                             James E. Boggan Award

Dear Neurosurgery Match Recipient;

     Congratulations on a successful match in Neurosurgery. It is exciting to be embarking on a career in the most challenging and exciting field of medicine.

     We would like to invite you to apply for the James E. Boggan Award. This award has been created in honor and appreciation of Dr. James Boggan, MD, by his associates and trainees. Dr. Boggan is an Emeritus Professor and Julian R. Youmans Chair in the University of California, Davis Department of Neurological Surgery. His long career has been emblematic of settling for no less than perfection in patient care, operative technique, teaching, and shaping the vision of countless neurosurgeons as well as the Department of Neurosurgery.

     The purpose of the award is to provide a financial boost to medical students who have matched in a neurosurgical training program in the United States and are bridging the gap between finishing medical school and moving to a residency program. Almost every neurosurgeon understands the daunting prospect of embarking on a long, arduous residency often with an empty bank account and a sizeable educational debt. While we can’t alleviate all such problems, this award is meant to provide $10,000.00 in a tax free grant to help move, contribute to early rent in your new locale, and provide a modest cushion as you start your neurosurgical career. In special cases some smaller grants have been given.

     We wish as one generation of a specialty to the next that we could do more to lessen the financial struggles of extended training, and perhaps someday we will be able to. We hope this is a start, and please consider this as our way of welcoming you into the most rewarding and difficult endeavor you will ever have the privilege of undertaking. We are cheering for your success.

     Like all neurosurgeons, we have a visceral dislike of red tape and paperwork. Nonetheless, there is an application process which we have tried to keep simple. We are hoping to base these awards on financial need, recommendations from your previous professors on character, competency, and commitment, and ethnic/racial representation in neurosurgery. We pledge complete confidentiality and no information sharing of your application.

     Please complete the application and submit the information requested for consideration. Information will not be made public or placed online, and all information will be deleted after the awards have been determined.  Please complete the application and submit materials by May 1, 2022. We intend to notify the awardees by  May 15, 2022 and forward funds by June 1, 2022 to be helpful in making the transition from student to resident.

     Thank you for your interest, and best wishes for a successful career.
